Taking the next step in nano safety

Nano Connect Scandinavia’s nano safety event in Gothenburg resulted in a plan for a number of activities to give companies as well as the general public a better understanding of the possibilities and risks associated with nanotechnology.

Some thirty experts on nano safety, from Danish and Swedish universities, the paint industry and other companies interested in nanotechnology, gathered on January 27 to explore possibilities to collaborate.

The outcome of the meeting was a list of concrete activities and ideas, such as:

- A workshop for industry representatives, on topics such as risk assessment, legislative issues and methodological development related to nano safety.

- Courses for specific target groups. This could be a way to give journalists a more nuanced picture of the risks associated with nanotechnology, or to bring policy makers and authorities up to speed on the latest developments within the nanotech area. Another idea was a Ph.D. course on nanomaterials and characterization.

The delegates identified a number of areas where they felt that Nano Connect Scandinavia should be a link between people and organizations in the Scandinavian nano community. Intelligent matchmaking could be a way to build consortia of researchers and companies when applying for funds. It also promises to tie researchers from different disciplines closer together, making risk assessment an integrated part of the research process.
